01Frequently asked questions

How does Assay value my item?

Every valuation is a blended estimate from multiple real-market sources. Depending on the category, that includes sold-price databases (PriceCharting, Card Ladder), grading services (PSA, PCGS), specialised registries (WatchCharts, Heritage, Sotheby's, Phillips, Goldin), and live marketplace data from eBay and category-specific platforms. The estimate is a band (low/mid/high) plus a confidence rating reflecting how much corroborating data was available.

We don't make valuations up. If we don't have enough data, the app will say so rather than guess.

Why am I being rate-limited on valuations?

The free tier includes five valuations per day. The counter resets at midnight UTC. Upgrade to Assay Pro for unlimited valuations, portfolio tracking, price alerts and one-tap listing.

You'll see free_limit in the error message when you've hit the cap.

How do I restore my subscription on a new device?

Sign in with the same Apple ID that purchased the subscription, then open Settings → Restore purchases in the app. Apple's StoreKit will return your active entitlement and Assay will unlock Pro / Vault features automatically.

If restore doesn't pick up your subscription within five minutes, email [email protected] with the email address on your Apple ID and we'll investigate.

How do I cancel a subscription?

All subscriptions are managed by Apple. Cancel any time at iPhone Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions → Assay, or via the App Store subscription page. You'll keep access until the end of the current billing period.

If you're inside a free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends to avoid being charged.

What does escrow mean in Assay?

When a deal opens between a buyer and a seller, the buyer's funds are held by our payment partner and only released to the seller when the item is delivered and confirmed. For high-value deals we add bonded couriers and third-party authentication before release. This protects both sides from fraud — and is the reason every sale runs through Assay rather than a direct payment.

How does authenticity verification work?

Every listing is checked against multiple signals: certification numbers (PSA, PCGS, BGS, watch reference numbers, art catalogue IDs), seller history, listing-image consistency, and duplicate-detection across the marketplace. High-value items can be routed to a third-party authenticator before the deal completes — this is automatic above the safe-passage threshold.

If a listing is flagged, the seller is shown the reason and given a chance to provide more evidence. We don't auto-publish anything our checks reject.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. Open Settings → Account → Delete account in the app, or email [email protected] from the address on your account. We'll remove your personal data within 30 days, subject to legal retention obligations (tax records, completed deals — six years).

My valuation looks wrong. What do I do?

A few things to check first:

  • Is the grade on the slab / cert exactly what you've entered in the app?
  • For watches: have you entered the correct reference number?
  • For coins: have you selected the right mint mark and year?

If everything looks right and the number still seems off, email [email protected] with the item details and what you think the value should be — we use these reports to improve the valuation model.

Why didn't I receive a push notification?

First check iPhone Settings → Notifications → Assay is on. If it is, open the Assay app and pull down to refresh — your push token is re-registered on every launch.

If you still don't see notifications you expect, email [email protected]. Apple's APNs occasionally drops tokens silently; we can usually re-establish delivery from the server side.

Is Assay available outside the UK?

The app is available in all 175 App Store territories. Valuations are returned in your local currency where we have data; otherwise the source currency is shown alongside an FX conversion. The marketplace is open to all users, but escrow availability for very high-value deals depends on local payment and KYC partners — the app will tell you up-front if a deal exceeds what we can clear in your region.

What languages does Assay support?

The infrastructure supports all 39 App Store locales (every language Apple lists, plus regional variants). At launch we have full translations for 14 locales — English (UK/US/CA/AU), German, Spanish (Spain & Mexico), French (France & Canada), Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Portuguese (Brazil & Portugal), and Russian. Others fall back to English UK gracefully and will be filled in as translations are reviewed.

How do I report a bug?

Email [email protected] with what you were doing when it happened, what you expected to happen, and what actually happened. Screenshots help. If the app crashed we'll already have a MetricKit diagnostic on our side — referencing the date and time helps us correlate.

02Response times

One person (the founder) reads and replies to every support email. Most messages get a response within 24 hours; everything within two working days. Privacy and access requests are answered within one month as required by UK GDPR. Critical security disclosures get an acknowledgement within two working days and a coordinated response after that.

03Status

The Assay API status is published at api.assayapp.net/health. If you suspect a wider outage, check there first — if it returns anything other than 200 OK we're probably already on it.

A note on tone Assay is intentionally small and personal. There's no chatbot, no scripted-response macros, and no support tier system. Every reply is from a human who actually built the thing you're emailing about.
